I may agree more with the positions of Cynthia McKinney, Ralph Nader, & Dennis Kucinich, but from a presidential frontrunner, I've got to say I'm very impressed with this honest & nuanced speech about a very difficult subject -- race & racism in America.

Re: Obama's speech today about race in America
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 5:29 AM...I still don't believe "he" wrote it...but believe he delivered it convincingly enough to vault him past John 'I admit I don't know much about economics' McCain. Clinton's kudos were the classiest thing she will ever do in public........
...I concur with Dennis/McKinney and Ralph in a cabinet position.......but will continue Obama'ing.......cuz that's what one does riding westward through Hungary, circa 1280.....just sweeping things along...... -

"Doesn't matter if he wrote it. He had the courage to say it."
Perhaps it does matter inasmuch as if he wrote it himself then it would be more likely he would actually be sincere and authentic in believing and acting in accord with that which he is saying.
Politicians say whatever their corporately-paid-for polling results tell their campaign managers and speechwriters will get the candidate elected, then once in office they flim flam around in all sorts of ways at odds with or in reversal of what they said (promised, even) while play-acting before the election. -

AlaskaSteven, did you listen to the speech? It didn't sound like this to me at all. Instead of offering easy answers, he challenged people of all races to think more deeply about racial issues. That's not pandering; that's leadership.

I read that Obama's handlers argued against the speech. It's not the type of speech a campaign manager would write - way too risky, and more importantly, way to subtle and nuanced.

Re: Obama's speech today about race in America
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 3:25 PMthat speech was RISKY AS HELL.
as a black american i was VERY impressed with that speech. not only did he mention several of the long-standing issues that black americans have had with the system, he also challenged us (blacks) to work on the solution WITH white people. he pointed out that what hurts one group of people is bad for everyone if gone ignored--"our problems" are *your* problems, too.
this is the kind of thing that gives people abroad hope for the usa. obama is someone who can be as nuanced as the situation requires.

Re: Obama's speech today about race in America
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 1:23 PMI'm trying to think of the last time I heard a speech from a politician that actually contained substance.
There's been a lot about Experience, and that may or may not have value in a president. But Senator Obama has something a hell of a lot rarer than Experience - he has the ability to inspire people. -
